An Insider's Guide to Hair Removal
After years of working in laser hair removal and aesthetics, there are things we tell clients every single day that aren't common knowledge — and knowing them makes a real difference in treatment outcomes. Here's what we'd consider the insider's guide.
Hair grows in cycles — and that's why multiple sessions are required
Hair follicles cycle through three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser hair removal and electrolysis are most effective during the anagen phase, when the follicle is actively producing hair. At any given time, only about 20–30% of your hair is in this phase. That's why a single session can't get everything — you need multiple sessions, spaced to catch each wave of active growth.
The spacing between sessions matters as much as the sessions themselves
Going off-schedule isn't just inconvenient — it can actually reduce your results. The intervals between sessions are calibrated to match your hair's growth cycle in the treatment area. Body areas are typically 4–6 weeks; facial areas 3–4 weeks. Waiting too long means you miss hairs at their optimal treatment phase.
Shaving before laser is required — waxing is not
This surprises many new clients. You need to shave the treatment area before a laser session (the hair shaft above the skin will absorb the laser energy and can cause surface burns). But you must not wax, thread, or pluck — these remove the root, and there's nothing for the laser to target.
Sun exposure is the most common reason a treatment gets postponed
Tanned skin — from sun, tanning beds, or self-tanner — changes the way the laser interacts with the skin. On tanned skin, the laser is more likely to target the melanin in the surface rather than in the follicle, increasing the risk of burns or pigmentation changes. Always come to your appointment with skin as close to its natural tone as possible, and protect treated areas with SPF afterward.
Hormonal factors can slow your results
Conditions like PCOS create ongoing hormonal stimulation of hair growth, which can counteract the effects of laser treatment. We always ask about this at consultations, and clients with hormonal concerns are referred to an endocrinologist before we begin. Getting the hormonal picture right first leads to significantly better outcomes.
Consistency is everything
The clients who get the best results are the ones who come in on schedule, follow aftercare instructions, and complete their full treatment series. Hair removal isn't a one-and-done — it's a process. The more consistent you are, the more lasting your results will be.
If you have questions about your specific situation, we're always happy to talk through what to expect and help you plan your treatment. Book a consultation to get started.
