The Pros & Cons of Different Types of Hair Removal Options
There are more hair removal options available today than at any point in history, which means more choice — but also more confusion about what actually works and what's right for your situation. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
Shaving
Pros: Immediate results. Inexpensive. Easy to do at home.
Cons: Regrowth is fast — often within a day or two. Repeated shaving can cause razor burn, ingrown hairs, and skin irritation. Hair appears coarser as it regrows (because you're cutting it at a blunt angle). No long-term reduction.
Best for: areas where speed and convenience matter more than longevity.
Waxing
Pros: Removes hair from the root, so results last 3–6 weeks. With regular sessions, hair tends to grow back finer and sparser over time. Affordable per session.
Cons: Hair needs to be a certain length before you can wax (typically 1/4 inch), which means a period of visible growth between sessions. Some discomfort during the procedure. Can cause temporary redness or ingrown hairs.
Best for: clients who want smooth skin for a few weeks at a time and are comfortable with the grow-out requirement.
Threading
Pros: Very precise — ideal for eyebrows and facial hair. No chemicals. Works well on sensitive skin that reacts to wax.
Cons: Slower than waxing for large areas. Requires a skilled technician to achieve good results. Not practical for body hair.
Best for: eyebrow shaping and small facial areas.
Laser Hair Removal
Pros: Long-lasting results — most clients achieve 70–85% permanent hair reduction after a full treatment series. No grow-out period between sessions (you shave rather than wax). Comfortable with modern systems like GentleYAG™. Efficient for large areas.
Cons: Multiple sessions required (typically 6–8+). Most effective on dark, pigmented hair — not effective on blonde, grey, or white hair. Requires some sun avoidance. Higher upfront cost than waxing or shaving.
Best for: clients who want a long-term solution and are tired of managing hair on an ongoing basis.
Electrolysis
Pros: The only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal. Works on all hair colors, including blonde, grey, and white hair. Effective on all skin types.
Cons: Each follicle is treated individually, so it's time-intensive for large areas. More practical for smaller areas or finishing work after laser. Multiple sessions needed.
Best for: clients with light-colored hair that laser can't target, or anyone who wants complete, absolute permanence on small areas.
Our recommendation
For most clients, laser hair removal is the most practical long-term solution — it significantly reduces hair over time, requires no grow-out, and is comfortable with the GentleYAG™ system. Waxing is a great complement for areas or hair types that aren't ideal for laser. Electrolysis fills the gaps laser can't.
